As part of the Haringey Greener Schools Project, Quantum was delighted to visit Willow Primary School in Broadwater Farm, Tottenham, on Wednesday 10th December 2025, supported by grant funding from the Greater London Authority.

Working in collaboration with EN10ERGY, we delivered an interactive 1.5-hour renewable energy workshop to the school’s enthusiastic Eco Committee, made up of pupils from Years 3 to 6, led by teacher Gladys Merceron.

Bringing Renewable Energy to Life with the Eco House

The session centred around the Eco House, a hands-on learning tool designed to help students explore how energy is generated and used within a typical home. Using the model and its real-time digital interface, pupils were able to investigate:

• How solar photovoltaic (PV) panels generate electricity
• How solar thermal systems can heat water
• How insulation and glazing affect heat loss and indoor comfort
• The relationship between energy use, carbon emissions, and climate change

The Eco House software allowed students to see live data on screen, showing how the house responds to simulated sunlight and how changes to insulation impact temperature and energy efficiency. This real-world visualisation helped turn abstract concepts into something tangible and easy to understand.

Big Conversations with Young Minds

The session began with a discussion about greenhouse gases, global warming, and the role energy plays in almost everything we do. The pupils demonstrated a strong understanding of where energy comes from and why reducing reliance on fossil fuels is so important.

Together, we explored:
• Why fossil fuels are harmful to the planet
• Why solar, wind, and hydro power are vital for a sustainable future
• How renewable technologies can be used in our own homes
• Simple, everyday actions that help reduce energy waste

We also talked about the school’s newly installed solar PV panels and how the Eco Committee already takes responsibility for spotting and reducing wasted energy around the school.

Inspiring Action Beyond the Classroom

The pupils were highly engaged throughout the workshop, asking thoughtful questions and eagerly experimenting with the model. One standout moment came when a student shared that she wanted an Eco House for Christmas so she could continue her investigations at home – a perfect example of curiosity turning into inspiration.

The enthusiasm shown by the Eco Committee highlights the value of practical STEM learning at an early age. Sessions like this not only build technical understanding but also empower young people to become confident, energy-conscious decision makers.

“En10ergy was pleased to engage Quantum to present energy saving ideas to primary school children in north London. The ideas were presented with an engaging slide show and using a model house, which can demonstrate how to save energy use at home. There was plenty of opportunity for the pupils to ask questions and to contribute what they knew already. A really lively and practical introduction to the topic.” – Pamela, En10ergy

Looking Ahead

At Quantum, we’re passionate about engaging with young students while minds are still forming – helping to build awareness, confidence, and curiosity around renewable energy. Seeing these future eco-leaders in action is a powerful reminder of the vital role education plays in the transition to a greener future.

The session delivered at Jo Richardson Community School was extremely well received, with very positive feedback from staff across departments. The level of interaction and engagement was excellent, and the passion for the subject came through extremely strongly throughout the session.”
