Why gaining green skills should be your New Year Resolution

Looking to learn something new in 2024? Here’s why you should consider our LCL green skills training courses…

The green skills sector needs to recruit 400,000 workers between now and 2050 for the UK to meet its net zero goals, according to research by the National Grid

And one in three UK job postings now requires green skills, LinkedIn’s Global Green Skills Report has revealed.

But demand is vastly outstripping supply, especially when it comes to workers qualified to install low-carbon technology such as heat pumps, solar PV and electric car charging points.

UK homeowners and businesses are increasingly adopting green energy and heating technologies  – MSC data shows there were 220,500 certified installations in 2023.

This marks the most successful year for small-scale renewable installations since 2008, when records began to be kept.

Grants

Heat pump uptake remains high, thanks in part to the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers grants to homeowners and businesses looking to replace a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump.

It was announced on 18 December that another £1.5 billion has been committed to the scheme.

The Government also hopes to have 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028.

But there are only 3,000 trained heat pump engineers in the UK, according to social good charity Nesta, and at least 27,000 qualified engineers will be needed by 2028.

Our specialist training course is helping to address this skills gap. It is ideal for learners from a heating background who would like to upskill.

Plus, heating engineers who take our LCL Awards Level 3 course, which covers the installation and maintenance of air source heat pumps, could qualify for funding support.

Up to £500 can be claimed to cover the cost of heat pump training as part of the Government’s Heat Training Grant. Our team can advise on your application when you sign up for our training.

Training

We offer a range of training courses accredited by LCL Awards and Daikin to help you upskill in 2024. These include Level 3 courses covering electric vehicle charging equipment and small-scale solar PV.

Our other courses include low temperature heating and hot water, energy efficiency for gas and oil-fired domestic heating and hot water, hot water systems and safety, and electrical energy storage systems

Funding is available for heating engineers who complete Quantum Group’s air source heat pump training courses.

The Heat Training Grant initiative means we can now offer a refund to the engineers who undertake our training, on completion of our three-day Level 3 LCL Award course, LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps Systems (non-refrigerant circuits).

You will have to confirm that:

  • You are a sole trader or work for a business with 250 employees or fewer, or are unemployed
  • You or the business you work for are certified by an appropriate competent person scheme for heating and hot water systems, e.g. APHC, BESCA, Blue Flame Certification, Gas Safe Register, Certsure/NICEIC, HETAS, NAPIT, OFTEC or Stroma
  • Has your employer received £315,000 or more in Government subsidies over the past three years?

You will receive the Government Heat Training Grant of a £500 payment once you complete your LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps Systems.

Heat pumps could boost the energy efficiency of millions of British homes and buildings if installed correctly.

Decarbonisation efforts such as this are vital to help the UK meet its legally binding climate targets. But to achieve this, thousands more heating engineers need to learn to install and maintain green technologies like heat pumps.

To help, the Government is offering grants of £500 to trainees to cover the cost of learning to install air source heat pumps.

Quantum’s experienced trainers go above and beyond to deliver an engaging and informative LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps Systems.

This qualification is acceptable to all MCS providers and will train you to become a competent and confident air source heat pump Installer, allowing you to grow your business and support the decarbonisation of heating systems.

To qualify for the funding, you must hold:

  • A N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or Heating and Ventilating (Domestic or Industrial and Commercial) or Oil-Fired Technical Services or an equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence.
  • WRAS Water Regulation/Water Byelaws or equivalent (we can offer this course prior to the ASHP Course, if needed).
