Students praise Quantum Group’s ‘amazing’ green skills training

College students have been praising our bespoke green skills training course and “amazing” training bays.

Plumbing student Dylan enjoyed how our training covers sustainable technology in more depth than other courses

Our state-of-the-art bays give learners practical experience of working with low-carbon and energy-saving technologies such as heat pumps. The accompanying Level 2 course, Sustainable Energy and Renewable Technologies, offers a comprehensive introduction to fossil fuels, global warming, building regulations and working with live systems.

One of the plumbing students who took our course at London South Bank Technical College, Dylan, said Quantum Group’s training stood out from other courses thanks to the focus on green energy and the practical training available.

I’m a hands-on person and the ability to work on systems which involve sustainability was amazing

Dylan, plumbing student

He added: “In college I’ve been able to go over renewables and sustainability but it wasn’t in depth [like Quantum Group’s course is]. I’d heard that in this course [by Quantum Group] we’d learn about heat pumps and solar, so that ties into plumbing, which I’m going into. Everything is moving to sustainability and renewable energy, so I thought this would be a good course.”

Describing what attracted him to our new course, he said: “The fact that this course involves air source heat pumps and solar thermal, as it’s going to be a major factor in my plumbing in the years to come.

“The most interesting part of the course for me was the practical side of things. I’m a more hands-on person, and the ability to work on systems which involve sustainability and new technology was amazing. I learn more when I’m doing something, not when I’m watching it on a screen.”

Practical

Fellow student Dillon said: “This is the first course I’ve taken in sustainable energy. As a plumber, I want to know as much as I can about the industry and new technologies. If you understand more, you have a better insight into the construction industry as a whole.

“I liked this course because it was hands-on and there was more of a practical aspect.”

Dillon has clear ideas on how this experience will elevate him from rivals in his plumbing career, saying: “Because new technologies are coming into play more and more in different places, not only industrial but domestic, it will help me to have an understanding of these.”

Similarly, he was impressed with how the course helped him build on his existing knowledge. He said: “I’ve learnt bits and pieces from other courses, but this course brings it as a whole.”

He concluded: “With the knowledge I’ve gained, I can move into sustainability and renewable technology. If I have a customer who wants to move on to something that’s new and green I’ll be able to advise them. I get to stand out now.”

Net zero

A third student, Josh, said: “This is my first course in this sort of technology. It’s in depth [and] very detailed. I’ve done my Level 2 plumbing before.

“The Government is implementing net zero for global warming and climate action and what we need to do to address it. It’s so important.”

Why gaining green skills should be your New Year Resolution

Looking to learn something new in 2024? Here’s why you should consider our LCL green skills training courses…

An engineer wearing a red shirt and red cap is installing a heat pump at a home

The green skills sector needs to recruit 400,000 workers between now and 2050 for the UK to meet its net zero goals, according to research by the National Grid

And one in three UK job postings now requires green skills, LinkedIn’s Global Green Skills Report has revealed.

But demand is vastly outstripping supply, especially when it comes to workers qualified to install low-carbon technology such as heat pumps, solar PV and electric car charging points.

UK homeowners and businesses are increasingly adopting green energy and heating technologies  – MSC data shows there were 220,500 certified installations in 2023.

This marks the most successful year for small-scale renewable installations since 2008, when records began to be kept.

Grants

Heat pump uptake remains high, thanks in part to the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers grants to homeowners and businesses looking to replace a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump.

It was announced on 18 December that another £1.5 billion has been committed to the scheme.

The Government also hopes to have 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028.

But there are only 3,000 trained heat pump engineers in the UK, according to social good charity Nesta, and at least 27,000 qualified engineers will be needed by 2028.

Our specialist training course is helping to address this skills gap. It is ideal for learners from a heating background who would like to upskill.

Plus, heating engineers who take our LCL Awards Level 3 course, which covers the installation and maintenance of air source heat pumps, could qualify for funding support.

Up to £500 can be claimed to cover the cost of heat pump training as part of the Government’s Heat Training Grant. Our team can advise on your application when you sign up for our training.

Training

We offer a range of training courses accredited by LCL Awards and Daikin to help you upskill in 2024. These include Level 3 courses covering electric vehicle charging equipment and small-scale solar PV.

Our other courses include low temperature heating and hot water, energy efficiency for gas and oil-fired domestic heating and hot water, hot water systems and safety, and electrical energy storage systems

How we’re helping colleges close the green skills gap

Communities across the country are now benefiting from a share of £165 million in government funding to enhance training opportunities in their area and plug local green skills gaps.

Quantum Group’s air source heat pump training bays give students hands-on experience of installation and maintenance

The money – from the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF) – is being distributed up until 2025.

The green skills sector is facing a major skills shortage, amid surging demand for engineers who can install and maintain low-carbon technology such as heat pumps, solar panels and electric vehicle chargers. Another 400,000 green roles will need to be filled to build this net zero energy workforce of the future, according to the National Grid

Many organisations and further education colleges are now looking to deliver a new ‘green’ curriculum – and the Quantum Group is here to help.

Training bays

We have already supported a number of colleges to ramp up their training programmes.

This includes installing our state-of-the-art training bays. These give students hands-on experience of working with low-carbon tech such as heat pumps, solar PV and electric vehicle chargers.

We have also created a bespoke and complementary Level 2 training course, Sustainable Energy and Renewable Technologies. This course is assured by City & Guilds and was produced in partnership with eco-heating technology brand Daikin UK

Meanwhile, our Train the Green Trainer Academy supports college tutors and lecturers to upskill and improve their own knowledge.

Our team can advise on the most cost-efficient solutions for your college and support you to meet the LSIF revenue and capital spend deadlines put in place by the Government.

‘Amazing’

Students who took part in a trial run of our Level 2 course at London South Bank College (LSBC) last summer and used our training bays have praised the learning.

One participant, Dylan, said: “The ability to be able to work on systems which involve sustainability, new technology, that’s coming into plumbing was amazing for me. I’m a hands-on learner, I will learn more when I’m doing something.”

Another student, Josh, said: “I’ve done my Level 2 Plumbing and this course has a lot more information, it’s very detailed.

“The Government is implementing net zero and this [training] will give me a head start on the knowledge I have to learn about before it’s actually law.”

Knowledge

As well as installing nine training bays and running our Level 2 course, LSBC has also taken part in our Train the Green Trainer programme.

Tim Weston, Director Career Pathways, STEAM, said: “Our electrical and plumbing teams were really impressed by the knowledge and passion of Quantum’s trainer. Looking forward to further renewables training with you.”

Passing of new Energy Act hailed as ‘great news’

A person flips wooden cubes that show carbon levels going from increasing to decreasing

Landmark legislation designed to help deliver net zero has now become law – and the passing of the Energy Act 2023 is being hailed as “great news” for the green energy sector.

The reforms – described by the Government as the “biggest piece of energy legislation in the UK’s history” – aim to deliver a more efficient energy system by boosting investment in clean energy technologies and support thousands of skilled jobs.

The Energy Act – which received Royal Assent on 26 October – also includes new consumer protections and frameworks.

Solutions

Quantum Managing Partner Maria Gonella said: “The new Energy Act 2023 is great news for the green energy sector and a welcome step in the UK’s transition to net zero.

“We need to decarbonise our energy system. Our mission at Quantum is to help create a cleaner, greener world for future generations, by designing green technology solutions and training the workforce of the future on how to install and maintain this technology, such as heat pumps.”

New measures include allowing Ofgem to set rules on excessive pricing and incentives for the heating industry to invest in heat pumps.

Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho said: The Energy Act is the largest piece of energy legislation in a generation.

“The Act also supports our new approach to make sure that families don’t feel a disproportionate financial burden as we transition to net zero, and forms a central part of our efforts to keep people’s bills affordable in the long-term.”

Students at LSEC Bromley explore the new Green Skills Lab

The innovative learning space is designed to give students the skills needed to help fill the green skills gap as the UK moves towards net zero and more renewable sources of energy.

Our Managing Partner Maria Gonella attended the 12 September opening of the lab, which features specialist training booths developed and installed by Quantum’s engineers.

Maria said: “We owe it to the next generation, our children, to do what we can to try to put right our misunderstandings and help create a cleaner, brighter future.

“The equipment allows students to get practical, hands-on experience of working with air source heat pumps, solar thermal, solar PV, battery and electric vehicle charging, to complement the theory they learn in the classroom.

“At Quantum, we are creating our tomorrow in a number of ways, including the design of these booths across five renewable technologies – air source heat pumps, solar PV, solar thermal, battery and EV charging.

“We have then broken this down further into three practical elements which can be taught using the new training booths adopted by Bromley in the Green Skills Lab. These are a fully working system; a student installation, service and maintenance booth; and a fault-finding booth.

“I’m delighted to see these bespoke facilities installed here at London South East Colleges’ (LSEC) Bromley campus and I’m sure they will be of huge benefit to students. Students who have used them before have told us how much they enjoy the practical learning.”

Curriculum delivery

Nick Cocks, Director of STEM at LSEC Bromley, said: “The team at Quantum has been amazing. We have an excellent Green Skills Lab supplied by them, which will be an integral part of us delivering a meaningful and engaging curriculum in the coming years.

“The wrap-around package of events and trips organised, and by, Quantum will be so beneficial to our students. These will include Digital Construction Week and Future Build, for example.

“Collaborating with Quantum on the curriculum delivery via their ‘Train the Trainer’ programme is also key to making this work for all who study here at LSEC.

“I look forward to working closely with Quantum to help address the green skills needed for the 21st century.”

More than 130 electrical and plumbing students attended the launch event and visited the lab, which is one of the first in the region.

Fossil fuels

Quantum’s training booths complement our new level 2 training course, Sustainable Energy Technologies, which is City & Guilds assured and has been launched in partnership with Daikin UK.

This first-of-its-kind course is designed to give young people and career changers an introduction to green technologies.

The training covers basics such as fossil fuels and their impact on the environment, understanding energy supply and sources, legislation, building guidance and regulations, and knowledge about greener energy solutions such as air source heat pumps.

We hope a pilot scheme will be rolled out by LSEC following a successful test run of the course with students in July.

One participant, Dylan, said: “At college we had a brief module on sustainable energy and renewables but it wasn’t as in depth as this course… it allowed me to be more hands-on with the new technologies coming into the world, whereas with my [other] level 2 course was rushed and just theory – we didn’t have this hands-on approach.

“I’m a more hands-on person and the ability to be able to work on systems which involve sustainability [and] new technology that’s coming into plumbing was amazing for me. I’m a hands-on learner, I will learn more when I’m doing something.”
