LCL Awards: Installation and maintenance of small-scale solar PV systems

Introduction

This course will teach you how to:

  • Install, commission and hand over small-scale solar PV systems
  • Inspect, service and maintain small-scale solar PV systems.

This Level 3 award is a regulated, nationally recognised qualification, based on industry National Occupational Standards. It is recognised by Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) registration bodies as a way to join the scheme.

Who this course is for?

This course is designed for anyone aged 18 and over, working in the electrical industry. You may want to update your skills or to use the course as part of your continuous professional development.

Course content

The course is made up of four units:

  • LCL-R3010 – Know the requirements to install, commission and hand over small-scale solar photovoltaic systems
  • LCL-R3011 – Install, commission and hand over small-scale solar photovoltaic systems
  • LCL-R3012 – Know the requirements to inspect, service and maintain small-scale solar photovoltaic systems
  • LCL-R3013 – Inspect, service and maintain small-scale solar photovoltaic systems

Subjects include (but are not limited to):

  • Health and safety risks and safe systems of work
  • Regulations/standards relating to installation, testing and commissioning
  • Design principles of module array size and position
  • Protection techniques and components
  • Testing, commissioning and handover of solar photovoltaic systems
  • Commissioning, inspection, testing, handing over, servicing and maintenance of installations
  • Fault diagnosis and fixing.

You will complete seven practical assessments as you go through the course, plus one 50-minute online multiple-choice assessment.

Course requirements

To apply for this course, you will need to be working within the electrical industry, have relevant experience and hold:

  • Level 3 Electrotechnical N/SVQ or equivalent
  • Level 3 qualification in Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2018
  • Level 3 qualification in Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations.

You may also apply if you are a qualified supervisor in a recognised Competent Persons Scheme (CPS) and you’ve met the requirements of the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS).
