LCL Awards: Installation and maintenance of solar thermal hot water systems

Introduction

This course will teach you how to:

  •   Install, commission and hand over solar and active solar thermal hot water systems.
  •   Inspect, service and maintain active solar and active solar thermal hot water systems. 

This Level 3 Award is regulated by Ofqual and recognised by Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) as evidence of competence to install and maintain solar thermal hot water systems.

Who is this course for

This regulated qualification is for learners who want to demonstrate their knowledge of the installation and maintenance of solar thermal hot water systems.

You may be looking to update and extend your skills, obtain a licence to practice, prepare for further learning or training and/or extend the range of work you can undertake. Alternatively, this course may form part of your continuous professional development.

Course content

The course is made up of four units:

  •   LCL-R3030: Know the requirements to install, commission and hand over solar thermal hot water systems.
  •   LCL-R3032: Install, commission and hand over solar thermal hot water systems.
  •   LCL-R3033: Know the requirements to inspect, service and maintain solar thermal hot water systems.
  •   LCL-R3031: Inspect, service and maintain solar thermal hot water systems.

Subjects include (but are not limited to):              

  •   Health and safety risks and safe systems of work
  •   Regulatory/standard requirements relating to practical installation, testing and commissioning
  •   Types and layouts of solar thermal hot water systems and the purpose of components
  •   How to diagnose and fix faults in ‘active’ solar thermal hot water system installations
  •   Connecting solar thermal hot water system collector circuits to combination boiler domestic hot water circuits
  •   Installing solar collector arrays and pipework
  •   Requirements for testing, commissioning and handing over solar and active solar thermal hot water system installations.
  •   Routine service and maintenance

You’ll be assessed on work performance activities as you go through the course, and take one short-response written assessment.

Course requirements

To apply for this course, you’ll need at least one of the following qualifications:

  •   N/SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plumbing
  •   N/SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation)
  •   N/SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation)
  •   N/SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services
  •   N/SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance

You may also apply if you hold certification that predates N/SVQ qualifications, provided it demonstrates your competence in these subjects.

If your qualifications don’t include certification in the subjects below, you’ll also need separate certification covering:

  •   Water Regulations/Water Byelaws 
  •   Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems
  •   Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating
